It has recently come to my attention that Rec Room, a popular free cross-platform social video game, will be having it’s servers shut down in June 1. I want to talk a bit about of my experience with Rec Room, and a final goodbye to it. So let’s not waste anytime and get right into it.
How I got into Rec Room.
The first time that I played Rec Room was a bit after I got my first VR-Headset I was scrolling through the store to look for games to play. I was exactly looking for free games, I remember coming across Rec Room. I downloaded it, and got right into the game.
First time playing Rec Room.
I remember I was with someone, I proceeded to enter the game I was so confused, I remember that the first game I played was my own game. I was so confused that I made a room instead of playing a game or room, I remember, I used the park template and I was SO confused, after that the person I was with helped me get into an ACTUAL game/room it was the bowling room, I was having fun, but then I stopped playing for a LONG period of time.
Second time playing Rec Room.
The second time I played Rec Room was when I discovered that It was on steam, I remember that I was in my dorm room doing random things with a bow, and drawing on the whiteboard, after that I played a game called “Meme Elevator”. I saw every single floor. After that I became more of an active user playing various things, another game I played was called “OneJumpEverySecond”. I remember staying afk for hours to get the highest jump possible.
Playing with my friends.
I remember that after that I was looking for games to play with my friend in a call, I had also screenshared him Rec Room for a long time by then, I needed to find a game that doesn’t require steam he didn’t have steam and was lazy to make an account, so I found that Rec Room (At the time) didn’t require steam so he got the game and we started playing, I then remember that we hopped on, the game I previously talked about, “OneJumpEverySecond” that was our first game on Rec Room together, than we proceeded to play “Meme Elevator” and then we played for hours and hours.
Recent experience in Rec Room.
I was playing Rec Room and by that time they added “Roomie” which was a personal AI companion which you could have, I saw videos with it and got interested on getting it but it required something called, “Rec Room Plus”, I remember I got Rec Room Plus and started playing with Roomie and trying the features I unlocked. A bit of time after that, I wanted to play Rec Room again with the friend who hadn’t played In a while, so we tried to make him a new account but, suddenly it didn’t work and it said something along the lines of: “Rec Room is no longer available on PC without steam”. After that we didn’t play for a LONG time. A few days ago I made him an account on his phone, it wasn’t the same but it worked, I remember it was fun, then I played Rec Room alone again, until one day I was on “Meme Elevator” I went offline for a bit until I came back to an update, I didn’t read the steam update announcement, so I didn’t know what it was, I got on the game to then see that there was a new notification, “Schools out! Rec Room is gonna shut down on June 1st.”. Since I got that notification yesterday (3/30/2026), I thought it was an early April fools joke so I didn’t think much of it until, a day had passed and there was no update saying it was an April fools joke. I was worried I searched and found a reddit page confirming it. I was DEVASTATED.
Final goodbye to Rec Room!
As of now, 3/31/2026, I plan to do various things leading to the end such as, posting tutorials on Rec Room, and playing it for the last time with my friends. Here goes my final goodbye to Rec Room: Thanks, Rec Room, thanks for EVERYTHING, I’m not sure if you guys UNDERSTAND how much I will miss that game, it brought me some great moments, so many great memories from that game alone, playing with my friends, making rooms, playing rooms, and doing lots of things that brought me endless hours of joy, it made my day on days that weren’t the best. Thanks for everything, Rec Room, an awesome game I will never forget, thanks for every single thing you have gave me, I can’t stop thanking you all, thanks.
